The Netherlands scraped a 52-51 win over Ukraine in Sopron, Hungary, on Tuesday evening to claim their second win in three games in the Additional Qualifying Tournament for the EuroBasket Women. Both sides' EuroBasket hopes died earlier in the day when Hungary beat Bulgaria to clinch first place in Group A. Games are still important, though, as both Ukraine and the Netherlands try to develop a winning habit. Ukraine had every chance to prevail in this encounter, with veteran center Olena Zherzherunova twice giving her team the lead late in the contest. After she went up for a lay-up to make it 49-48 with 3:20 to play, opposing pivot Naomi Halman replied to put the Dutch back in front. Zherzherunova scored again with 1:45 to go for a 51-50 lead, but 21-year-old point guard Myrthe Beld had the last laugh. She managed to get the ball in the paint and scored for the 52-51 Dutch victory. Zherzherunova finished with a game-high 14 points while Tanya Bröring and Marlou de Kleijn poured in 10 points apiece for the Netherlands. |
