Turkey produced a determined display at the EuroBasket finals with a 64-57 win over Great Britain in Bydgoszcz on Saturday. Despite 18 points from Natalie Stafford and a spirited fightback in the fourth quarter, the 2012 Olympic Games hosts could not pull off an escape after falling behind in the second quarter. Building on their 33-37 advantage at half-time, Turkey started the second half with a 8-2 run sparked by Nevriye Yilmaz to go 41-29 ahead. However Stafford ignited an 8-0 burst which closed the deficit to 53-50 at the end of the third period and the Australian-born guard set up a tense finale when she brought GB to within 57-55 with 1:20 remaining. Turkey though, led by 18 from Yilmaz, produced a decisive surge claiming 7 of the game's last 9 points to secure victory |
